I'm travelling from Sydney to Newark via Los Angeles on Virgin Australia/Virgin America.

I have a 2hr connection at LAX. Would this be enough? I have been told my bags are checked all the way through to Newark and I can get my boarding passes at Sydney. I've heard immigration at TBIT takes up to 2 hours. Should I change flights?

Did you purchase a through ticket with Virgin Australia?

Or were they two separate tickets?

Who advised you that bags are checked all the way to EWR?

IMHO, 2 hours is not enough time at LAX. Clearing border control normally takes at least 1 hour.  You must collect bags at LAX and then recheck them.  Exiting the baggage area through another security control can add another hour. Then getting from one terminal to your US domestic could add another hour as you'll need to clear through TSA security - even if you've got boarding passes.  if you don't, then you'll add more time getting these from a check-in desk (usually very poor service in US adding extra time.  In summary, allow at least 3 hours, with 4 hours to be safe.

Agree with 521303 - at least 3 hours required.  LAX can be a nightmare. Not always, but you never know until you're there.
