What's the best way to secure a points upgrade from a booked economy fare on QF intl? As long as fare condition permits, does it matter whether red-e, super or flex saver? Any tips? (I'm a Platinum FF)

I don’t think the type of economy airfare influences your likelihood of securing an upgrade – the only difference that makes is how many points you need to use. Platinum FFs already have first dibs on upgrades, and so you already have an advantage over Gold, Silver, Bronze members. But to maximise your chances against other Plantinum FFs, I think you need to request an upgrade early.

Also if possible, you may wish to consider flying at off peak business or leisure departure dates/times so there’s spare seats available…

In addition to the previous comment the different fare types for economy will cost you a different level of points to upgrade to Premium Economy or Business. There are five or so fare grades not applicable for an upgrade. Refer to the frequent flyer section of the QF website.  I would request an upgrade as soon as you have been ticketed.  You will be advised if you are successful from 48 hours prior to your flight.
