to their MEL to PVG schedules. I used to be able to get direct flights each way quite easily. Now it's hard to do that as frequency seems to have dropped and they seem to want to direct you through PEK instead. Any ideas why?
From AirlineRoute, seems the frequency drops 1 June. You could also fly on China Eastern (MU).

Is flying direct so critical that you'd go out of your way to fly with a mainland carrier?
I see this development as an excellent opportunity to fly SQ, assuming you're Star Alliance.
Or if you're agnostic/OW, QF or CX.

I agree with TRB. I have flown SQ from SYD/MEL to PVG and it's a very short transit in SIN. You have the bonus of flying A380 from SIN-PVG

Yes because there's a 2 hour drive when I get there too.
