I recently transited through Detroit and found it very easy. If you have an ESTA, the self kiosks are a quick process and then immigration waved me through quick enough. Without exiting, you then drop your luggage at the transfer desk, clear security and make your way upstairs to your domestic flight. All in all, it took me around 30-40 minutes at 6pm on a weeknight.

The OP is asking about transiting through DFW and doesn't need an ESTA as presumably he's a U.S. citizen since he resides in Detroit.
