I've got an upcoming trip to Shanghai booked on MU metal in J, but marketed by QF on a QF ticket, does anyone know if there is any way to select seats in advance? The QF website fails to even record the seating preference and whilst the QF Premium call centre can see the seat map, they weren't able to actually select the seats.

I know with most Chinese airlines the seats are assigned at check-in, but just wondering if anyone had luck getting reserved seating before with China Eastern..

Also I'm guessing I'm entitled to the 40kg allowance rather than the MU 30kg for J. Though not counting on the +20kg allowance afforded me normally as QF WP on QF/EK/OW.

If you have the MU booking number, log into their site and see if that gets you anywhere.

Unfortunately their website is shocking... (anyone surprised there?) the seat reservation requires a MU ticket number and seems to be only for Y class and you can only choose from like 10 rows.. *sigh*

Your best bet would probably be calling QF to get the MU ticket/res number first and then call your local MU office and ask them to assign a seat for you (if they can).
