Hi

I searched the thread but previous articles were from 2013.

Just wanted to know whats the best way to use points to upgrade to Business on a SQ flight from BNE to FRA?

I have approx 300,000 points across my Amex and Virgin FF account and am looking to get the most bang out of them for this euro trip. Flying with wife and 2 kids (2yo + 4yo).

Thanks

30,000 will be nowhere near enough to upgrade any leg once you transfer them to krisflyer

And you need to have purchased a fully flexible Y ticket to upgrade to W or a W ticket to upgrade to J.  The only way to upgrade from fully flex Y to J is if the flight doesn't have W.

Given the difference in SQ miles between upgrading and booking outright is so small (and that you can only upgrade from fully-flexible economy), you might be better off to just use your miles to book the flight outright in the cabin you want to travel in.

If you don't have enough, you might also consider booking a return trip to Singapore (Australia-Singapore-Australia) with money, and using miles to book Singapore-Europe-Singapore separately, or vice versa, provided you have plenty of time in between connecting flights (ideally overnight) as those connections wouldn't be 'protected' being on separate tickets. :)

The value is not great (you lose 25%), but thats up to you. You should call SQ and check if the upgrade is available BEFORE you transfer, as moving them back to VA would incur another points loss. I've done it though, and it was worthwhile.

Upgrading all four of you would be 85k each, in each direction... so you may have to consider your options carefully.

Also, consider whether the flight you are on is worth upgrading. If its an old 777, for example, you will go from Economy to Business directly, but be on the old angled seats. On a newer 777-300 or A350, you'll get the nice newer seat, but you'll need a Premium Economy ticket to upgrade.

Good luck.
