Air France’s new hotel-grade business class mattress
Airlines are battling for sleep supremacy above the clouds.
There are many reasons why passengers pay top-dollar for business class, but comfort arguably tops them all – especially when it comes to delivering a comfortable environment for sleeping on a long overnight flight.
So it’s no surprise that in the high-stakes battle for premium passengers, airlines are pulling out all the stops to deliver a truly restful journey by turning business class suites into makeshift bedrooms.
Air France is joining the sleep-focused trend with the launch of new mattress pads on its long-haul business class flights, through a partnership with Sofitel.
Business class passengers will see the Sofitel ‘My Bed’ mattress pads appearing on selected long-haul Air France flights from July 2025, and by year’s end it will be available on all long-range flights, regardless of departure time or flight duration.
Placed on each seat before boarding, alongside a pillow, blanket, and slippers, the grey mattress pad picks up one of the signature colours of the Air France’s business class cabin.
The mattress pad has carefully-positioned notches that adapt to all business class seats and seatbelt fittings across the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A330 and Airbus A350 jets.
It can also be used in all seat positions for the entire duration of the flight, from takeoff to landing.
Air France’s move mirrors a broader trend within the hospitality industry. Hotels have long recognised the power of a good night's sleep, such as the partnerships between Simmons to provide signature mattresses at Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons properties.
This move to boost business class comfort comes as Air France’s spacious new La Premiere first class takes flight.
With a generous 3.5m2 footprint, the 777 La Premiere suites have a separate armchair and bed – or rather, a chaise longue which reclines into a 2m long, 75cm wide bed.
