Boutique Asian accommodation label Capella Hotels will open its doors in Sydney early next year, transforming a historic CBD building into a 192-room property.

Capella Sydney will be the brand’s first Australian hotel (unrelated to and not to be confused with Capella Lodge on Lord Howe Island) and will take over an entire city block a short stroll from Circular Quay.

“Capella Sydney will elevate luxury accommodation options for business and leisure travellers and inject fresh energy into the rejuvenated Circular Quay precinct,” said David Tsang, CEO of Pontiac Land, parent company of Capella Hotel Group.

Capella Sydney will occupy the sandstone-clad NSW Department of Lands and Education building ringed by Loftus, Bridge and Young streets, with modern interiors juxtaposing the building’s history with multiple artistic pieces paying tribute to original architect George McRae.

Capella Sydney will feature 192 rooms and suites.

The rooms and one-bedroom suites range in size from 50sqm to 245sqm, each featuring high ceilings and large windows to allow in plenty of natural light. Spacious bathrooms will offer double vanities, a rain shower and separate deep-soaking bathtub.

The hotel will be home to multiple restaurants and bars on the ground floor, helmed by Brasserie 1930s, coupled by The McRae Bar and its modern interpretations on vintage 1920s beverages prepared by talented mixologists.

Another highlight will be the 20-metre indoor swimming pool overlooking Bridge Street from the hotel’s Auriga Spa on level six.

The addition of Sydney to Capella Hotels sees it join a network already open in China, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, with plans to open in Taiwan, the Maldives and Saudi Arabia in the next three years.

Capella Sydney builds on a strong line-up of luxury hotels due to open in the CBD in coming months and years, beginning with The Porter House Hotel opening its doors in mid-September.

The line-up continues in the next few months by W Sydney, while closer to the harbour, construction continues on Waldorf Astoria Sydney, due to welcome guests from 2025.
