Cathay Pacific is extending the status of all Cathay frequent flyers – members of the rewards program previously known as the Marco Polo Club – to December 2023, a full year out from the previous tier extension to December 2022.

The automatic extension applies to all Cathay Silver, Gold and Diamond memberships expiring between December 2022 and November 2023, which will now automatically be extended to 31 December 2023.

In addition, all unused mid-status benefits of Silver, Gold and Diamond members expiring between December 2022 and November 2023 will also be extended to 31 December 2023.

Cathay Silvers, Golds and Diamonds who have already retained their status through to December 2023 – through a series of mechanisms such as taking two flights with Cathay or any Oneworld alliance airline or earning 30,000 Asia Miles miles "from non-Hong Kong finance partners by converting credit card points to miles”– will also receive a bonus serve of Status Points.

Cathay Silvers are in line for 100 Status Points, with Golds being gifted 200 Status Points and Diamonds receiving 400 Status Points.

Those Status Points will land in member’s accounts in January 2023 and serve as a head start towards their 2024 status (or reach a mid-status benefit), with each allocation being one-third of the total needed to remain at that status tier.

Paul Smitton, Cathay Pacific’s Director Customer (Lifestyle), said the sweeping status extension was in recognition of Cathay member’s “longstanding support and loyalty.”

For his part, airline CEO Augustus Tang said he was “greatly optimistic” of the times ahead, following Hong Kong’s removal of mandatory quarantine.

“As Hong Kong and the world open up, we’re looking forward to the recovery and return of international travel.”

Cathay was “adding flights as quickly as we can”, Tang said, with scores of aircraft now being awakened from desert hibernation and returning to the skies.

However, it’s not currently permitted to briefly break your Cathay Pacific journey for a quick daytime stopover in Hong Kong for some shopping or to meet up with friends in the city for dinner and drinks.

I'd love Qatar to do the same.

I am now much more confident of retaining my Tier in 2024.
