QF Platinum here. I managed to get Economy classic reward seats to LAX. If they open any Business classic reward, do i get the upgrade (i have applied online) automatically or do i have to check every day and call to get that upgrade??
I would strongly urge against upgrading due to the large amount of points required for the upgrade. However, you should definitely call HOBART and request that they release a Classic Reward J seat. Then you would be re-graded into a (U) class fare and have to pay the difference between the (X) points and (J) points in addition to any tax adjustment($$). You can request this as often as required. It will not only confirm your seat greater than 72hrs out, but will also significantly reduce the amount of points required for the journey.
i paid 45000 points for economy and the upgrade request was at 109000 points. would a business class classic reward straight up be lower than these combined?

You should have paid 41,900 points. In business a reward booking would be 108,400 points.
