Sydney is the largest hub in Australia/NZ and I agree with AirportAddict Australia is at the end of the line.

Kind of like London-Heathrow? Well, it serves Oceania pretty well. Considering Sydney is also a financial services hub, Sydney Airport serves a lot of premium airlines compare to other airports in Australia. If the population increases significantly, we could probably see more airlines coming in.

Looking at the location, it could probably serve South East Asia and Transpacific route to South America and North America on the West Coast. Airlines from South East Asia can transport their passengers to Sydney to make connections to the Americas. However, most of them choose Tokyo or Taipei to connect onwards to North America. If I am not mistaken, the Transpacific route is very protected to Australian/NZ and US Airlines from Oceania. Unless, the route opens, that route is very protected.

To have sydney as a half way point would be like going all the way up to Seoul just to catch a connecting flight into europe. Just not real practical. Unless you are going to NZ or something its not worth the time unless you would just like to visit aus.

Along these lines, I think that Sydney International Airport is sorely due for an major overhaul.  Sydney is an international city, a regional economic hub and a global tourist destination.  Our airport pales in comparison to airports like KLIA in Kuala Lumpur or Changi in Singapore, not to mention North American airports like Pearson in Toronto.  Arriving in Sydney international after a 16 hour journey can be demoralising and even embarassing at times.

I really think the airport needs a massive redesign and should be bold and beautiful, just like Sydney herself.

Any thoughts?

When they do their major overhaul i think they need to totally redesign what is now known as the international terminal. Personally, i think it is a bit of a shambles.
