I am currently Velocity Platinum but I know that wont get me anything flying United. I plan to credit status to Aegean Air to get Star Alliance gold which I will have for the return flights. Will this change which lounges I can access?

As you're on a biz-class itinerary you'll be able to access

1. The NZ lounge at SYD (quite nice)

2. The UA lounge at SFO (pretty meh)

3. The UA lounge at JFK (never been there, but can assume equally meh)

As you're returning with *G status you'd theoretically be able to access other *A lounges. However I'm fairly sure there's none accessible from your terminal at JFK.

At SFO, there used to be nothing available, but since EVA joined Star Alliance it *may* be possible. Reports on trying to get into the EVA lounge with *G status while flying on United are rather mixed but generally unsuccessful. It's not much of a lounge anyway, so I'd forget about it.
