American Airlines buy/bonus miles?

Hi. American airlines currently has an 18k bonus if you purchase 60k miles. so it equals to around 30% bonus... Just want to ask what is the highest bonus percentage they offer? Do they ever offer 50% or even 100% bonus miles

(planning to purchase some miles, but wont need to use them until next year. Should i buy now... or would there be a better offer in the next 6months)

Thanks for the replies; just new to aa so its great to get some tips from other frequent flyers. cheers!

Benjo, there MIGHT be a better offer in the new year (e.g. buy 60,000 plus 30,000 bonus). However, the question is how many points do you need for your award flight? You can only buy 60,000 pts per calendar year (plus bonuses) - so if you need more than this you'll have to buy some now (your 2013 quota) and some in the new year (your 2014 quota).

A word of caution - the AAdvantage FF scheme could change with the merger with US Airways. AA currently offers far better value than United or Delta on long distance premium so there is a real chance there will be a devaluation = more points needed for an award. United just doubled the number of points needed for a lon g distance award on partner airlines and Delta has also devalued its program...

PS. Keep an eye on AAdvantage Shopping portal - you can buy goods with huge points bonuses: there is a current bonus (get 2500 miles for $250 spend) then periodic bonuses by supplier - eBags was recently 35 miles per dolllar (or thereabouts) and currently magazine subscriptions at 60 miles per dollar offering the points cheaper than actually buying them off AA ! Delivery to Australia may be a problem in some cases, although there are services which effectively give you a USA address and consolidate/ship to you (myusa and others), which could prove cost effective if you actually need/want the goods and the points bonuses are conpelling enough...

Hi PLATY, thanks for the reply... im thinking to buy 60k miles & use it for a return business syd- hk/sing or manila...

The 60 miles per $ on the mag subscription sounds decent... Do they have a link in there website? or i have2 subscribe on another site? (i have an aunty in L.A so i could mail it there)

With regards to the devaluation of points... im sure in time they will follow in the same direction as delta and united, however i think AA is still a far easier & cheaper option of obtaining miles then say qantas or another airline which asks double the miles.

Thanks again for info.

aadvantage e shopping mall is currently offering 60 miles per dollar spent on magazine subscriptions via magazines.com

Add on the 2500 miles for $250 spend and you'll end up with 62500 miles for $1000 spent on subscriptions. Works out to 1.67 cents per mile or thereabouts.
