To avoid a repeat of baggage issues, I’m asking if anyone can
advise if what I encountered on a recent flight is correct.
The flight was a Qantas-issued redemption ticket from Hong
Kong to Perth via Bangkok on CX connecting with JQ. The flights were ticketed
as CX and JQ on CX and JQ metal and the Qantas itinerary detailed a 4-hour
“transit” time in Bangkok. No alert to having to collect baggage in BKK.
The CX web site did not allow us to check in online for the
CX sector, due to “missing personal information” (which had been completed in
full). It advised to check in at the airport if the problem persisted. We
therefore queued at HKG for a manned check-in counter where the yawning and
disinterested CX agent advised that we could only check our baggage to BKK.
After much discussion, a supervisor checked the rules and advised that our
baggage could be checked through to PER.
On arrival at BKK, we were greeted by a CX representative
who advised that we would have to collect our bags in BKK, even though they had
been tagged to PER. “Cathay does not have an agreement with Jetstar as Jetstar
is a low-cost airline”. This resulted in us spending over 2 hours filling out
online landing cards, queuing at immigration, collecting bags, queuing to check
in and queuing at security instead of relaxing over a meal and a drink in the
lounge prior to an overnight flight. As a 75-year-old traveller, I certainly
wouldn’t have chosen this option if I had been made aware of the need to
collect and re-check baggage in BKK.
My belief, from past experience, is that the baggage should
have been through-checked. Does anyone know if this is correct?
Many thanks in advance.
