Maybe check if a bus reward seat is available and if so tfr the points to the family member who booked it as get them to call virgin to amend the booking
No upgrades permitted when using points for an award ticket ,you have to purchase the right class of ticket at the time of purchase.note some economy tickets when purchased using $ are not upgradable as well .

I have got a few flights to and from MEL that have been purchased using points. Is it possible to upgrade to J class?
One of the flights in particular that I want to upgrade has been purchase using points buy a family member, can I upgrade that flight using my points?
Also how good is row 14 on the 737? Seat guru wasn't helpful.
