Recently I travelled to NZ and picked up a 'SPARK' travellers phone plan, I'm guessing that you have an unlocked phone already? But the deal is for $40 which expires in 30-50 days (I can't remember) this SIM only plan which is a one off cost gives you 2GB of data around $50 worth of calls back home (international) and $200 of calls to use in NZ.
Hope this helped but don't know about any good USA plans

T Mobile is the easiest option in USA. Its network is good and works fine with our unlocked phones.
$50 gets you plenty for keeping in touch plus you need $10 add on to call internationally. Details on their website T-Mobile.com
Give AT&T a BIG miss., unless you have a US credit card and social security number

Agree with Bob; this is exactly what I do! You will get a US number, which you can keep for future visits.
