You used to be able to select a comfort seat 72 hours before. Now it says it's a different cabin. Delta said it changed on May 16 when I called them, Virgin have no clue when I asked them.
I also tried on a trip in late May and had the same problem. Also rang Virgin and they had no idea either. Trust me getting pretty fed up with Virgin / Velocity at the moment.
My wife and I flew DL just yesterday as Gold and had no issue upgrading FOC via the DL website within 24hrs prior to departure (Gold 24h, Platinum 72h)
We went into the my bookings page, went to seat select and the option to upgrade to Comfort+ was offered at $0
From my various conversations with the Delta staff it seems bookings before a certain time frame are 'grandfathered' under the previous arrangement. This may be why you could do it apacau.
I eventually got on on my SYD to LAX but that wasn't through the interface, that took a lot of arm twisting.
The fact Virgin have no idea or no concern that the feature 'doesn't work is a bit concerning. They used to have really great operators in the phones.
Right now, I'm about to take a flight to SFO from LAX and the app definitely won't let me upgrade despite there being seats (X Base fare).
I don't really care so much apart from the fact that on Delta you end up stuck in ailse 5000 if you don't get put in comfort plus.
