A little background, so I am Currently VA Gold and will probably become Plat by the time I fly Etihad in December. I have bought a Freedom Fare (Full Fare) which was pretty much double the price of the discounted fare as expensive as flying SIA Premium Economy. Now my friend is a VA Gold member and he said in the past when he has flown Etihad he simply asks them if there is an upgrade available and when boarding he gets a seat change to Business.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and was wondering what is the best way to ask them so that they dont confuse it for an upgrade with Points or Cash?
Regardless whether you are a frequent flyer or not, etihad are not as generous as they used to be in the past and Free upgrades are only operational upgrades in which case the aircraft deployed has changed or they have oversold the economy cabin (usually in peak periods like school holidays/Christmas. Operational Upgrades (Op- ups), would be based on the fare paid by the individual, the date the ticket was purchased and economy cabin class booked. (I.e. H or B fare of economy) . Not having any special meal requests and travelling alone does aide the process of op ups is usually given at the boarding gate, when the manifest has been closed for the flight or in rare cases at the check in desk.

Haha, so what you're really asking is a how to get a free upgrade from economy to business class? Good luck with that, unless the flight is oversold.
