I often book in separate bookings, as in SYD-DXB return and DXB-LHR or LGW return, and nearly always find something to suit. Sure it costs a few more points and I book an overnight stay at least in DXB to ensure I don't miss my connection in case of delays. It's far easier than SYD-LHR return which is very difficult to obtain.

Phone them up ( the platinum number 131211), ask them to request the seats you want  in J. Do this when the rewards are released ? 350 days out.

I have done this for J rewards to asia, not uk as yet. Managed to secure 4 J rewards return to SIN on QF during the Easter holidays next year for the dates I wanted.

If the seats not available on the day you ask, keep trying inventory chages all the time. They can convert bucket J fares into award booking fares for P ff

However you may find better availibility with CX, their J product is better and their award availibility better also.

Good luck and let us know how you go!

Like others have suggested call on the day the flight opens up and request the seats. Qantas may not confirm straight away, some times it may take 24-48 hours. At P level I was always able to secure at least 2, at P1 Qantas are a little more forth coming about the number of seats that they can convert, you may be surprised.
