I thought I'd take a gander at the cost of flying Virgin to Hong Kong via Melbourne, and how that compared with SIA, CX and QF.
It seems however this combination of flights isn't available? If I ask the website to price SYD-HKG it comes back with only codeshare SIA flights. If I try a 'multi-city' booking it says there are no flights available.
I have the same issue. I have tried to search for Adelaide to Hong Kong via Melbourne, but it gave me Singapore Airlines. So at last I booked Qantas for AUD599.

I looked in mid-July and mid-August; departing on a Thursday and returning the following week on a Tuesday.
