I got an email this morning with a QF Double Status promotion. Reading the T&C’s it states something like “only for the Recipient of the email, regardless of other passengers in the same booking”. I registered, as we’re planning some travel within the qualifying period, but does that mean only I get the double SC and not my wife also? (As it reads) But if she registers as well, will she receive the bonus?

Hello Simon, usually the registration is coded only to the recipients so that even if your wife clicks the link in your email to try and register, it won't be recognised. And yes, even if you book for both of you only you will receive the extra status credits.

I think that's the second targetted 2SC promotion Qantas has had in recent months, I wonder if this means another 'open to everyone' 2Sc offer is still some months away?

If she gets the email too, and registers, will we then both be eligible?

Is anyone aware of the logic/rationale behind selecting some passengers for the DSC offer and not others? Thanks. It would be useful for ABT to ask Qantas this directly.

I'm sure there is some rationale but I am equally sure Qantas is not about to reveal it to anybody!

There often appears to be no rhyme or reason to these DSC offers, although I would agree there must be, but if you look at the people who get them sometimes they don't seem to have much in common when you compare current status levels, how close they might be to Gold or Platinum, how frequently they fly etc. There would be some system which Qantas uses, probably a set of different criteria which they pull every few months to rotate the DSC offers throughout the eligible membership base, but sometimes it seems pretty arcane!

I got one a few weeks back, the first one in a long time. Of course it comes at a time that I cant use it or don't need to...

Are you referring to the 50% more SC offer that came out a few days ago?

"Big data" (internet) sure is changing things! Historically, over the past 5-6 years, QF has traditionally done one or - if lucky - two DSC's a year. These were usually of a week's duration. Now, it seems that there are reports of more heavily targeted DSC's every 6 weeks or so, and generally limited to 4 days duration.

It seems to me that one of two things are afoot. Either QF is getting way better at analysing passenger trends or that they are sensing an increasingly difficult trading year ahead - given the rise in fuel costs, sinking dollar exchange rate and a potentially shrivelling "discretionary" travel dollar in pay packets.

Agree with your point.

Re big data - yes, we are now seeing too many DSC or 50% SC coming out and are mostly targeted. Or at the least these start out as targeted, and later are extended to a wider group.

My guess is, when releasing a targeted DSC, QF is monitoring how well the offer is taken and how many members from the target group have used the offer and how much revenue ($ or seat) is made. If the revenue made isn't matching or coming close to the expectation of QF, the DSC offer is then released to the next level of customers. And I think this cycle keeps going until QF is happy with the revenue.

Due to this constant monitoring QF has sometimes "extended" the DSC offers to ensure that revenues are made to QF's satisfaction or requirement.

Some members also mention that QF releases offers based on how long you've got left in your membership year and give you a gentle nudge to get those SC's up and reach the next tier or retain the existing one

Re difficult year ahead - absolutely, with the customer data readily available (thanks to the internet, social media and our travel/spending patterns being recorded somewhere, somehow), companies are now able to release better (read profitable to companies) offers and make the customer spend money in advance.

In QF example, by releasing a DSC just before June-July ensures that companies/businesses are given the right opportunity to exhaust/use any of their remaining travel budget and are locked in with QF before the financial year ends.

The last time QF released a DSC was for Saver and Flex International fares - In my opinion, this is a great opportunity for business travelers to lock in flexible fare for a long time and also make double credits on those. However, by leaving out Sale fare out of the equation, QF has (IMHO) ensure that the higher fare buckets are filled quickly and as the lower fare buckets are not, these Sale fares can then be sold at a higher price as travel dates near. Another strategic approach. Nothing wrong in QF doing this, as it's a business which needs to have good P&L statement at the end of each year

Smart moves, but, as customers we need to see what suits us and how much are we spending. In most cases, these travel offers and plans are genuine, but sometimes they're not

All the non-targeted 2SC offers seem to be released just before QF releases its quarterly financials, as pointed out perviously the targeted offers tend to be released a few weeks before this so hopefully we’ll see another handy 2SC offer released soon!

Not 100% sure BUT I have noticed that when I have logged onto my account and searched for flights and do this maybe a few times because I am genuinely interested in booking (but trying to work out best times/routes/prices etc), BUT still have not booked, then I will get an email with a special offer, be it bonus points, DSC, hotel sweetener deals. So perhaps that has something to do with it :)

Many people (including me) have seen this happen before.

You log in to QFF account, search for a flight a few time and try different date combinations and leave it at that. After a few days or may be the next day, chances of you seeing an email from Qantas offering DSC for that continent or nearby places are very high.

I have seen this happen quite a few times for me and others who observed this behaviour have documented the same in the link below :

I started this community discussion when I thought what I received was a direct (or not so indirect) result of my searching for flights on a specific route
