If I use my Qantas points to book a business class ticket from HKG to BKK (CX) and then connecting BKK to MEL (JQ) will my bags be checked through from HKG to MEL or will I be required to collect my bags and recheck in BKK?

Jetstar website suggests that maybe your bags can be checked through.

Please be aware that we don’t transfer your baggage between flights. However, there are some exceptions:

  • Connecting international Jetstar flights and flights with our partner airlines (see list below), where both international flights were purchased on the same booking

Cathay Pacific website also suggests that bags can be checked through.

Transfer baggage

Your baggage will be through-checked to your final destination if you are holding connecting itineraries booked on a single ticket

Are you referring to one ticket or two? Either way, I’m almost certain the answer is no.

Same ticket

The answer to your question is "Yes" when onthe same ticket, but could you not get a CX flight directly to Melbourne? That would be the obvious better choice.

We just flew MAN to BKK via Helsinki. Then BKK to SIN with Jetstar. Finnair checked our bags right through to SIN making it easy to transfer in BKK.

Slightly different but recently flew out of LHR on BA to DUS to connect on EK to DBX in Business Class, points redemption ticket through QF FF. QF only allowed less than an hour for the connection. BA staff at LHR told us they won't transfer baggage to EK. We had to retrieve baggage in DUS then go back upstairs and recheck-in at the EK. By the time we got there it was deserted as everyone had boarded. Luckily an EX rep we approached got us aboard by the skin of our teeth. Basically the door slammed shut as we walked through.... Asked QF for an explanation, am sure you all know the futility of that......
