American Airlines brings Flagship business suites to Australia
The new premium Boeing 787-9s come with private business class suites.
Private doors are de jour in modern business class, with American Airlines the latest to adopt what was once a hallmark of first class into the mainstream of premium travel – and now they’re headed to Australia.
The Qantas partner’s Flagship Suites will make their local debut between Brisbane and Dallas Fort Worth from October 25 2025, running daily through to March 28 2026.
And it’s a route perfectly suited to these comfortable cocoons, being the longest non-stop flight in the airline’s network by distance and averaging around 15 hours from gate-to-gate.
DFW-Auckland is another of American’s lengthiest treks, and will also see one of these ‘premium’ Boeing 787-9s between January 5 and March 28.
The 51 Flagship Suites on these Dreamliners are spacious business class berths with sliding privacy doors, room to work and relax, handy storage nooks, a large HD video screen and wireless device charging (along with AC/USB sockets, naturally).
Adding to comfort above the clouds is what American describes as “a one-of-a-kind chaise lounge seating option with an adjustable headrest pillow”.
The Flagship Suites situated by the window are angled out so that passengers can take in the view as well as enjoy a little extra privacy from people moving up and down the aisle, even without the suite door closed.
The suites in the middle also face away from the aisle, with a sliding partition which opens up if you’re travelling with a partner.
And if you’re sitting in row 1, it gets even better: welcome to Flagship Suite Preferred, one of four front row suites which embrace the extra space to the bulkhead.
American also ups the ante with special touches such as a mattress pad and pyjamas, a throw blanket and a memory foam lumbar pillow.
However, the airline says it will soon be upgrading the business class experience “on all widebody flights to East Asia, the Middle East, India, Australia and New Zealand” with the introduction of pyjamas and mattress pads, in addition to the slippers, dual-sided pillow (with cool-touch fabric on one side and traditional fabric on the other) and duvet already offered.
The Brisbane-bound Dreamliner also has 32 of American’s latest premium economy recliners.
The redesigned seat sports new headrest wings for additional privacy, while new calf-rests and foot-rests enhance comfort on the long-haul flight.
Unexpectedly elevated touches include wireless charging and USB-C and AC power outlets.
The new Flagship Suites and premium economy seats will feature on all of American’s newly-delivered Boeing 787-9 aircraft, and will also make their way onto the airline’s retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER jets.
