Qatar Airways elevates Adelaide-Doha schedule

The Gulf carrier is doubling down on its commitment to South Australia, and Kiwis can reap the benefits too.

Qatar Airways elevates Adelaide-Doha schedule

Qatar Airways is giving travellers two additional reasons to book a trip from Australia to the Middle East, with its Adelaide-Doha service receiving a boost from three to five times weekly from July 1.

The change brings the airline’s total number of Australian flights to 38 per week, delivering even more options for those hoping to cheer on our Socceroos at the FIFA World Cup in November.

Adelaide has become an increasingly important hub for the Gulf carrier, after its pandemic-related detour from Doha to Auckland – flying via Brisbane since August 2020 – was rerouted to fly via the City of Churches in April this year

Since then, the Qsuite-equipped Boeing 777, featuring 42 stunning seats with privacy doors in business class, has been shuttling Australian and Kiwi travellers across the ditch in style.

Jared Lee, Qatar Airways Vice President of Sales for Southeast Asia, Southwest Pacific & Indian Subcontinent, says the increased schedule highlights the airline’s ongoing commitment to both South Australia and New Zealand.

“The Australia and New Zealand region continues to be an area of strong growth for Qatar Airways, and expanding this service will support the development of the economy and tourism sector in both countries,” Lee elaborates.

“Not only do we continue to rebuild our network after the pandemic, but we are actively expanding it as travel restrictions ease. This is the latest in a series of enhancements to our Australian network this year, and we will no doubt continue to make upgrades as we expand our services further.”

However, although Qatar Airways has enjoyed a brief monopoly on the trans-Tasman route between Adelaide and New Zealand, it won’t for much longer.

Air New Zealand will be firing up long-awaited Auckland-Adelaide flights on its single-aisle Airbus A321neo from July 6, although no business class on the aircraft means Qatar will still have the competitive edge among travellers seeking greater comfort.

So far, 2022 has been a big year for Qatar Airways, with its A380 superjumbo now soaring back into Sydney, the temporary Brisbane route not only made permanent but boosted to seven per week, and services between Perth and Doha expanded to daily flights.

Surprising everyone, the Oneworld member also signed a strategic partnership with Virgin Australia, delivering perks like reciprocal lounge access, full ‘earn and burn’ across both airlines, and the ability to use Avios to book Virgin Australia flights.

Avios frequent flyer points is the same rewards currency of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and others. Adopted by Qatar Airways in March, it unlocks new opportunities for guests travelling across the airline’s extensive network of almost 150 destinations worldwide.

If you’re not already a member of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club loyalty program, right now is the best time to join, with the airline offering up to 5,000 bonus points if you sign up before December 31, 2022 and complete your first Qatar flight before July 31, 2022

A bit disappointing they got rid of the A350 out of Adelaide and on the return from Doha when connecting from Europe It had a sensible arrival time of 5:10pm in the summer months. The New Schedule does not work for a lot of us arriving close to 9pm(On days when one can transit via Singapore and SIA offers a daytime flight within say 90 minutes of arrival from say everywhere except London that gets it say 6:45pm you would be mad not to opt for that instead),from London the alternative is Qantas to Perth clear customs there and domestic onwards in around 10:30pm.

Adelaide has long been forgotten by Qantas.  Qatar and others have seen the demand.  Surely Qantas can start with an Adelaide to Singapore using a 737 to feed their Jetstar Asia network and other codeshares.

Would a 737-800 have the range for ADL-SIN?

Indeed. Also, a direct flight to the US a few times a week you would think you be viable. Having to transfer through SYD MEL or BNE really is painful, particularly with the Qantas's currently terrible OTP. So many missed connections. And then another stressful connection in LAX. On the other hand, I discovered during the pandemic that flying west with QR to the US east coast with one stop in Doha is so much more pleasant, even though a bit longer.

Not really One would need an order a321 of the long range variety for ADL-SIN. Lets not forget it's 1000km more than say Sydney-BALI.
