New-wave capsule hotels coming to New York

Japanese-inspired capsule hotels will soon be available in New York, with London-based Yotel set to open its first "Pod" hotel outside a European airport next year.

The self-described "iPod of the hotel industry", each Yotel cabin will be 16 square metres – a little over half the size of a standard hotel room – with designs inspired by first class airline cabins.

Each 'pod' has a tiny en suite, flat screen television and free Wi-Fi. 669 cabins will be packed into the 60 storey hotel, which also feature a theatre designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry.

Yotel hotels are currently located at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, London Heathrow and London Gatwick, wich prices starting at £65 ($91) per night. In 2007 Yotel cited Sydney as a potential target for their rooms, although nothing's been heard since.

Spain is also set to play host to "lowxury" rooms, with new brand Lookotels aiming to build up to 10 venues across the country.
