Qantas updates Android app

Qantas updates Android app

Got an Android smartphone? Then you'll want to grab the updated Qantas app, which is now available as a free download from Google Play.

The new app, which Qantas says has been redesigned "to be fully compatible with Android devices", sports the same travel alerts as its iPhone sibling to advise of your flight's gate number, boarding time, status, baggage carousel and more.?

Checking on online? The process has been streamlined and boarding passes are now available within the app.

You can also keep track of fares to your favourite destinations from right on the home screen?, and tap into a full serve of information for Qantas' domestic and international airport lounges.

Click through to Google Play to grab the new Qantas app.

PREVIOUS | It's been a long time coming, but Qantas has finally released its Android app for Google-powered smartphones – and added support for Google Now cards into the mix.

The Qantas' Android app mimics the functionality of its iPhone sibling but wrapped in an elegant Android skin.

You can browse and book flights, check in for domestic flights before getting to the airport and keep an eye on the status of your flight.

And you'd be mad not to set up customised alerts based on your desired travel destinations and price brackets so you'll be the first to know when that to-value fare is ready to snare.

Naturally, Qantas Frequent Flyer members can track their points and status level.

The free app is ready to download now from Google Play.

Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi reports that since the airline launched its new iPhone app in May "we have seen a more than 20 per cent increase in mobile bookings."

“It’s great that our domestic customers are realising the benefits of mobile check-in" he added, "avoiding queues and removing any need to print a booking confirmation at home or boarding pass at the airport.”

Qantas gets with Google Now

Another win for Google fans is that Qantas flights are now visible through the Google Now service, which provides pop-up cards packed with travel information for your flight.

This includes flight details, directions to the airport with live traffic updates and even the local weather at your destination.

Google Now is available on Android, iPhones and iPads as part of the Google Search super-app.

I downloaded this app this morning to my HTC phone, it's quite good, except when I click "next flight" I get the message "This site is experiencing difficulties at present. We apologise for the delay and will endeavour to restore operations as soon as possible".

Teething problems I guess.

I've just downloaded it myself. It's slick, smooth and generally an excellent app.

I was reading through the Terms of Use, however, and it states that you may receive notifications for flight deals you nominate. This stands in contrast to the notifications listed for the Windows Phone app, which appears to have full functionality including bag drop countdowns.

Obviously the app does allow you to track your own flights - incredibly useful - but the lack of notifications does worry me.

PS: Would it be viable for AusBT to run an article comparing the Windows Phone, iPhone and Android apps for Qantas?

Okay, the booking functionality isn't quite native - it seems to be using the iPhone-y mobile site within the app, so that functionality is reliant on the website and the app there is just a wrapper.

Hopefully, this is quickly rectified with complete functionality all native to the app - this would allow QF to have an excellent start-to-finish app.

I'll be interested to learn how the Google Now functionality works. If it comes via the app, or if Qantas feeds Google the flight times by some other method. Google now seems to be in its infancy, but has a lot of potential.

I think it's fed directly to Google - you can Google a flight number and you'll get today's live status for it, without the app.

That's pretty clever.

It's very useful. I don't know how it works, exactly, but it's a very powerful tool. You can also pull up a full non-stop weekly schedule for a route, simply by entering the two airport codes, in directional order, and then "flight". Google "syd sin flight" and you'll get the weekly Sydney to Singapore non-stop schedule.

Clever indeed.
