I wonder how many people know that Australia invented this system and has been requiring most foreign nationals to apply for ETAs since 1996.  Europeans get a free version - the eVisitor visa but that was just a compromise so the EU considered travel to Australia to be visa free for most EU ...

I've done this in the past but the process doesn't seem to be widely advertised or documented online.
