After reading these comments more than 2 years later I realise that much of what is said is still valid... to some extent, but with modifications and other aspects of the 777X, this means little...Boeing and Airbus are now concentrating on newer models of the 787 and A350 as opposed to 777X model...

R&D for supersonic, or even transonic, costs are abnormally high compared to sub-sonic aircraft. The Concorde was exceptionally expensive to develop and fly due to the aerodynamic differences from high sub-sonic to low supersonic flight (transonic). To go even faster still would increase cost...
