Virgin Australia rolls out self-entry terminals at lounges

Caught in a queue at the reception desk at the Virgin Australia lounge?

From next week you can ignore the peak-hour log jam and swipe yourself into the lounge using a new 'self-service' terminals.

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed to Australian Business Traveller that the terminals are now being installed at all of Virgin's airport lounges around Australia.

The terminals at Sydney and Brisbane are already working, and Virgin says the remainder will be activated through next week.

The terminals work with Velocity Platinum and Gold frequent flyer cards as well as lifetime lounge membership cards and are intended streamline lounge access during the busiest morning and evening travel times.

However, don't forget that as of August 15, Virgin will axe the 'anytime access' provision for Velocity Platinum and Gold members to use its airport lounges even when they're not flying on Virgin. Click here for the details...

Should the title of the story read " Virgin Australia rolls out self-entry lounges at Terminals"?  Or am I missing something?

Let's hope Virgin doesn't decide to axe these if they prove unpopular, then the story will read "Virgin terminates self-entry terminals" or "Self-entry lounges go terminal at Virgin terminal lounges"!

Any indication if you can scan a mobile boarding pass?  I thought I noticed an optical reading scanner on those last week.

What is there to stop random travellers turning up at a busy period (ie when staff at the desk are preoccupied) and just walking in, perhaps pretending to swipe a randon card over the reader on their way past? Is there a glass door that opens?

Seems like a nice idea though, so long as it doesn't ultimately lead to a reduction in staffing.
