Virgin launches 20% bonus for transferring Velocity points

Got a swag of ‘plastic points’ sitting on your credit card or charge card? Virgin Australia is now offering a 20% bonus if you transfer them over to your Velocity Rewards account.

This latest move in Virgin’s aggressive relaunch of Velocity Rewards is aimed to get casual flyers, who may have a substantial number of points sitting on their cards, to sample the 'new' Virgin Australia.

The promotion, which runs from 1 September through to 31 October, applies to cards issued by participating partners: American Express (including David Jones American Express Card members), Commonwealth Bank Awards, ANZ Rewards, ANZ Business One Visa Rewards, Westpac Altitude Rewards, and the Amplify Rewards cards of St George, BankSA and Bank of Melbourne.

Unlike the American Express Velocity Cards launched in July, which provide a ‘direct earn’ of Velocity points for each dollar you spend, these ‘indirect earn’ cards accrue points in the card’s own system.

Those points must be manually transferred to a partner ‘currency’ such as Velocity Rewards points.

In most cases, the transfer rate is 2:1 – two points on your plastic equates to one Velocity Reward point. But for the next eight weeks, Virgin Australia will boost the number of Velocity points you get by 20%.
