Just interested in everyone’s thoughts here because this is a new situation for me. I’d booked flights in business class leaving Sydney when those wild storms hit last week. My flight was cancelled but I was lucky enough to be offered an economy seat on a later flight. I took this as I really needed to get to where I was going.
To be honest, I’m so relieved that I was able to get to the destination on the same day that I’m almost not really fussed about the fare but wondering if I should question it?
On another front, I’ve been given points and status credit at the economy rate. If I’ve paid the business fair and there’s no partial refund surely it’s reasonable to accept status credits at the business class level?
Just interested in others thoughts before I call VA.
Honestly, that was something that should have been negotiated at the time that they offered you the economy seat. But I would contact VA and push your point here. You have paid business class prices for an economy ticket and economy earnings. Not. Good. Enough. They got you at your most vulnerable and abused their position.
Question it. Really push your point here. Otherwise, they will just let it wash over them.
When you contact Virgin what I believe you need to ask for is the Original Routing Credit (ORC) for the original booking you paid for. I've done this multiple times in the past for routing changes made by the airline. If you google the term "Original Routing Credit" you should find a few sites that provide a more detailed explanation.

Actually they did an incredible job when I explained the importance of getting to my destination (I was travelling for a funeral). It was 9.30pm when my 6.15pm flight was canceled. The 8.15pm flight was just about finished boarding, and they got me on that with minutes to spare. There was no time to discuss the fare details or what would happen next - nor did I care at that point in time. When on board, the cabin manager shuffled some things to get my partner and I the last row in economy with a spare seat for additional space and a bit more privacy, and brought down a bottle of wine from business class. They were very compassionate and caring, and I found the whole experience quite moving.
