I recently flew DJ over QF from BNE-SYD-PER and the inconsistencies across the board were extremely noticeable. I was the only one in J class from BNE to SYD and whilst it was an intimate setting it still felt they need a lot of practice. I wasn't offered a coat bag as it says I would and it felt like after service I didn't see the dedicated FA.

The coast to coast service then felt like I was flying a completely different airline. Meals prompt, coat service offered, take off bubbly offered. The FAs seemed much friendlier and actually felt like a worth while cost in using DJ for J class. Seats were much more uncomfortable than QF as with the IFE, which I read will be changed with the arrival of new A330s.

Does anyone else notice these inconsistancies? I can't justify J class with DJ when they seem like a "low cost" competitor to QFs J class which is always consistant.

I don't think it is as much about inconsistency as it is about different product on short domestic services versus long services. They don't offer the coat bag on most J services except for the coast-to-coast flights. which i think is understandable given the difference between a 1 hour BNE-SYD flight and the 4/5 hour flights to Perth. My experience has been that after the initial ramp up issues, the service on short domestic is consistent and the services to the west are consistent as well. Perhaps it a an awareness issue or how the airline manages perceptions on what should be expected on the short and long sectors.

While I like the innovative approach, having all these little 'sub-brands' is always going to cause confusion, and conflicting expectations. VA has 'Coast-to-Coast', 'Capitol-Express', their regular LCC style domestic/regional services and their full service long haul services, plus the unique services offered by EY, SQ, NZ and DL to deal with. Each of these varies quite considerably from each other, and as such, a 'international business class' ticket booked on 'Virgin Australia' might end up being anything from a fantastic full long haul service experience on SQ, to a Space+ style experience on NZ, or Premium Economy on a DJ plane across the Tasman.

I'm not saying QF is particularly consistent (in fact it astonishes me how inconsistent they can be), but at least the style is the same across the board, and you have some reasonable expectation of what you're getting when you book 'Qantas'.

I completely agree AM, whilst Qantas isn't always as consistant, they have the same style.

I'm yet to try the ATR fleet or capital connect service, but I think for now I will stick with QF for business and give DJ a try further down the track.

I think DJ has a good idea with the changes being made and perhaps over time, the consistancy will flow better. It can't be an easy task changing an airline within a year so of course QF has the upper hand. Though the QF staff could learn a lot from some of the DJ staff, one of the only consistancies I have found.
