Was your flight booked with a QF flight number through QF?  If not then no luck.

Doesn't matter whether its QF code or not... no upgrades on other metal.

Frequent Flyer Rules 101:

Points/Mileage are like currency; only legal tender in the jurisdiction that they are issued.

In the same way you wouldn't use AUD in New Zealand, so goes the logic that you cannot use Qantas Points anywhere else besides with Qantas.

The only time you can use points/miles from one frequent flyer programme to upgrade flights on another airline is when the airline offering the frequent flyer programme and the airline operating the flight have an agreement in place.

Even in that situation, the request for upgrade can only be processed by the airline offering the frequent flyer programme. The airline operating the flight is not able to process your upgrade using points/miles from the other airline's programme.

Such arrangements are more the exception than the norm. So far only AA,BA and IB have enterred into such an agreement (I stand to be corrected).

And, in the Star Alliance, many airlines have this arrangement. In the past I have used United Mileage plus miles to upgrade on Singapore Airlines, for example.
