I would say , most likely and possibly the shortest travel time would be going from Tokyo - Singapore - Melbourne - hobart, which all the routes are either star alliance members or Virgin Australia. Hope this helps :)

Depends on your definition of best. Does best mean cheapest? Or fastest? Or "best" onboard product? Or even best points earn? There are no *A or VA one-stop options, all will include 2 stops (only QF/JL or JQ can offer one-stop). For your VA flight to HBA, MEL is probably the easisest airport to transit.

*A options include:

NZ NRT-AKL-MEL/SYD/BNE-HBA

SQ NRT/HND-SIN-MEL/SYD/BNE-HBA

TG NRT/HND-BKK-MEL/SYD/BNE-HBA

OZ NRT-ICN-SYD-HBA

CA HND/NRT-PEK-SYD-HBA

BR NRT-TPE-BNE-HBA

I've actually just flown Singapore Air from Tokyo to Hobart! Flew Haneda-Singa-Melbourne-Hba. Left Tokyo at about 11 at night and worked best for connections and arrival times.

I was in econ though and keep this in mind because the flights were on A330s, so if you're in business you'd be better w/ different flights.
