Yes, but you must book the flight as an "Any Seat Award" not a "Classic Award".

Classic Awards do no earn status credits or points, but Any Seat Awards earn both as if you had paid for the flight with cash.

Australian Business Traveller has written about this here: http://www.ausbt.com.au/get-the-points-upgrade-your-qantas-frequent-flyer-status-at-no-cost

And here's the Any Seat Award info from Qantas: http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/usingPoints/qantas-any-seat

Yes you can - if you purchase an "ANY SEAT AWARD".

This ticket offers and behaves exactly like a standard 'Sale' or "Red- eDeal" ticket, except that the same is paid for in FF points (100%), or a proportional combination of Points + Cash. The 'Any Seat Award' accrues standard mileage points and status credits.

The 'CLASSIC AWARD' ticket requires significantly fewer FF Points but offers no FF points or status credits.
