This is a old feature which saw 'points' gained for commenting etc, but in the end wasn't fully implemented. But hey, you may just have gained some points for asking your question, Tom! :P

I wouldn't read too much into the 'points' tally Tom – quality over quantity and all that. ;)

Mostly via the Blue Up and Red Down buttons next to Report/Reply in the Answers.
Post useful/ ocassionally funny answers - get upvoted and add to points tally.
Post silly/ incorrect answers - lose points.
