Unfortionately JQ is the only carrier offering non-stop MEL-HNL and back however that doesn't mean it's the only way to go.

Hawaiian airlines fly to SYD, BNE and AKL so you could connect in either of those three cities with QF, VA, NZ etc.

Qantas fly from SYD so you could fly up to SYD from MEL but bear in mind SYD isn't the easiest connection point.

Air NZ offer 4 flights a week from AKL, which is another option.

Fiji Airways also offers a weekly NAN-HNL service although I would not reccomend that routing.

Of course you'll need to check times and prices but I hope this helps. :)

If you're going to connect via SYD or BNE, I'd recommend SYD. In BNE you have to

  1. Leave the terminal and walk to the train, or
  2. Leave the terminal and line up for a bus
At least in Sydney you get to wait inside the terminal!
