I hope to travel to New York around New Year's eve, if I travel First Class can I invite my friend from cattle class to join me for a drink or meal ? this is on Qantas First class flight

From my epxerience that answer is no. I have asked myself once before but the answer is was no as other passengers will have paid a large amount for their first ticket and so the airline doesnt think its fair for an economy paying passenger to receive that service for a lower cost. I understand where they are coming from and it didnt bother me. Always worth asking but most likely you will be told no.

On some occasions the crew may suggest that you both head to the upstairs A380 lounge to enjoy a drink together, but it's not to be expected and only if other business/first class passengers aren't using it.

Also remember that if you're flying in Qantas first class, you can guest that person into the Qantas Sydney/Melbourne First Lounge before your flight if you're travelling together (even if you're not a Qantas Platinum member), so you'll certainly be able to relax together pre-flight.

Harry, technically "no" to more than one but always ask and sometimes succeed.  I got a "shhh ok" to two guests in the 1st lounge MEL-LAX mid December and a resounding "no" with the same two guests LAX-MEL returning on New Years Day - I batted my eye lids, explained one was a Qantas Club member but was politely told I'd have to choose which one I wished to take in.... Off to the business lounge we went and it was quite ok. 

That said, I must remember to copy a lovely gesture I saw from a fellow traveller recently - all too often I go into the lounge alone, 1st or otherwise, as a solo business traveller.  I witnessed the befriending of a senior traveller by a "younger" chap walking the long concourse to the Emirates lounge in BNE and then he invited her into the lounge with him, she was clearly very touched, it didn't look patronising at all.  It was delightful to see such a considerate use of his guest privileges, a "why haven't I thought of that" moment.  I expect some will respond that it'd become very crowded if we all did that but 'twas nice to witness :)
