Cheap and Cheerful and you can get on and off at leisure. Take one of the open top buses that cover the key sights. Can be a little slow at times, but does allow you to do your own thing!

Make sure you both have hats.  It can be REALLY hot at that time AND you will no doubt be tempted to go on the top deck, in full sun.  Stock up on water from the supermarket. You will have a fabulous day.

I would be inclined to book online before you go. Companies such as Viator and Travelocity offer reasonable reviews for researching. Important, considering that a tour of the Vatican alone can take a full day.

I'd also be wary of booking day tours from the touts around the Colloseum - given that many of the 'street spruikers' are run by the Mafia. Some can be characterised by questionable behaviour.

We were - coincidentally - in Rome for 1 day in late-July a couple of years ago and booked Silvia from A Friend in Rome for a private tour. We couldn't recommend her more highly as we packed in an enormous amount in one day that we just would not have been able to otherwise. Her website is: http://afriendinrome.it/
