Hi guys, first post - hoping you can help!

Planning a trip to Japan in mid-late April and Vietnam Airlines seem to have some good J class prices going for around $3000AUD return on an open jaw from SYD-SGN on (B787-9) and onto NRT (A321) and i'll be returning via KIX-SGN (new A350-900) and onto SYD (B787-9).

These are the cheapest all aisle access 1-2-1 hard product in J i could find. Other similar prices are China Southern and Air China both flying 2-2-2 config in J (from what i understand).

I've never flown VN before and have always stuck to the big boys Emirates, Air NZ, Cathay, Qantas, SIA etc.

Question - has anyone flown VN before and what was their overall experience? Scale 1-10. Also advise on the lounge facilities in SGN and KIX if possible and their ratings. Safety record?? Bit of a nervous flyer - hence i fly J when i can.

Cheers!

I flew business class on VN a little over a month ago on the SYD-SGN-CDG-SGN-SYD route.

For the price they charge, it is an excellent deal - I highly recommend it.
I found VN business seats on both 787 and A350 very comfortable and the food/wine they served quite tasty.
Overall, the product in the air is probably 8 out of 10 (with 10 reserved for Cathay/Singapore).

The lounge in SGN was average - 5 out of 10 (it got rather crowded in the evening).
No idea what it is going to be like in KIX.

Safety rating, according to airlinerankings is 6 out of 7.

Awesome, thank you for that!  Yup, i also read elsewhere the lounge in SGN is not the most updated so this just confirms it.

Vietnam Airlines is a bit of a 'second-tier' airline and like the big Chinese carriers the business class seats are good but the service can be more 'average' than a standout. But my VN flights have on the whole been pretty decent and pretty good value for money.

I'm a regular flyer with VN. I've always found them to be great.

I can tell you from experience that your A321 leg in business will be very lacklustre, but the other legs will be good hard product. I believe they have been stepping up the food game in recent months which I'll be checking out in April.
The lounge in SGN is rubbish. I actually prefer to get a seat at the bar on the second level overlooking the tarmac or head into the Spa for a massage before the flight (opposite the bar)

Thanks for that! Very useful indeed!
