Hi ... off on a trip to China and wondering who to fly with. Would prefer direct flight so wonder whether there's any reason to choose the indirect path with Cathay ?

If it comes down to a choice between AIr China and the Code share China Eastern flight who would people recommend and why ?

Don't care to much about cost or service (within reason) #1 is a safe and timely flight

Thanks

QF to Syd then on to PVG or Cathay to HKG then Dragon Air would be my top picks. A330 business class on both is excellent.

Assuming you're planning to fly in J, I'd recommend the direct flight from MEL to PVG with China Eastern (MU). If you need the status credits, then consider a transit in SYD and then getting the MU flights on the QF codeshare as ajstubbs mentioned. I didn't use to rate the mainland Chinese carriers but having recently flown with MU between SYD/PVG in J (on QF codeshare) I was impressed by how much they've improved. Especially given the low-ish load factor in J on their 777-300ER, the service was very attentive.

The other route I'd recommend would be either CX or QF to HKG (QF only if they're flying the A380 and you have high enough status to bag a F seat but paying J price) and then an onward connection with CX/KA. But with MU offering the same reverse herringbone seats in J as CX, I'd prefer the direct option of MU740/MU738 between MEL/PVG.

If you go direct I would select Air China rather than China Eastern from Melbourne
