I travel a lot to both Manaila and Jakarta, and most of the time it's in Y. I flew home Wednesday night on QF42 from Jakarta and noticed that every crew member was male and at least 55. They were like robots, no personality and just meandered through the meal service and wouldn't know a smile if it slapped them in the face.

I have noticed this is a continued trend, particularly on these routes. You would think Qantas would mix it up a bit, but no it's Dad's Army all the way!

Why do you think I've switched to Cathay when flying to MNL?

Back in the day, the Manila run used to be filled with dirty old men going for a 'good' time. It used to get quite unruly. It was a run when they conveniently ran out of  alcohol an hour into the flight.  Qantas must have left the same flight crew assigned permanently.  Ã°Å¸Å¡Â¬

I was thinking of doing the same, particularly that as WP I seem to get op ups to J with CX....yet get zero with QF. And it means I can great lounges all the way.

Is the issue their age or that their customer service skills are not up to scratch? I would've thought you could have staff with a sub-par work attitude at any age.

I've noticed that Jakarta does have a disproportionate number of older male crew. Though never had an issue with them what so ever, and always been very friendly and top notch. And flying the route so much they now starting to remember me. I mostly fly J but occastionaly Y(one route where pick the right day to fly and points upgrade is an almost certainty).

CX is awfully good with upgrades for Emeralds. They're my go to airline for Asia. Frequency, breadth and service. Trifecta!

Of course you poor sods with QFF get peanuts by way of SC when flying other than with QF...

Excellent! We need Qantas to have a reason to operate those fantastic First Class lounges in SYD and MEL!

QF crew bid for routes; and it works on seniority, so the more senior crew can pretty much get what they want. It sounds like CGK is attractive to more senior crew, probably because it means a shorter time away from home.
