Thank you everyone for their imputs, it is all helpful. Qantas has sent an e-mail recommending to come to the airport 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours for international. Anyway, a relative works at Qantas so I am sure she can get me into the new Business Class lounge in Brisbane while I wait... ;)

Much money is being spent on security at airports and I have no problem with this - but so long as its spent effectively. What's the point of examining little old ladies and children and 99% of the rest of us with the resulting long queues and delays. It would be much more effective to concentrate on those with a record or whose profile matched the criteria for suspect terrorists. I have no concerns with their rights or otherwise.

As to selecting people at random to undergo extra examination for explosives the authorities don't know much about the mathematics of random selection. If they go to the races do they stick a pin in the racing guide or bet on form??

For many years I flew from a small airport at Syracuse in upstate New York and I was ALWAYS singled out for additional examination as I was a foreigner - never mind that I looked like a fairly innocent WASP. I was never concerned about  this because at least they had a system and were spending their money more effectively.

The system you described is similar to the US CAPPS system in place for 9/11, and only managed to "select" 10 of the 19 hijackers, including one flight, UA93, where not a single hijacker was selected for extra screening. It's simply more difficult to do so.

Arrived Monday 31/7 @ 8.20am on an Emirates flight from Bangkok and checked in for the domestic connection to the Gold Coast at the Qantas transfer section at the international terminal and no delays there at all, no one in the security line and I was expecting there to be chaos given the news reports I had seen on Sunday in Bangkok.

Yeah I wonder what group of people it is this time...

Wow... this would appear to be a highly unprofessional comment from an administrator.

Agreed. Better to put our heads in the sand.

The original question was about security delays, not any particular "group" of people. In the current climate, it is very easy to read racial overtones into any flippant remark.

For someone who's job it is, apparently, to police commenting standards, your comment does come across as unprofessional, and your follow up doesn't help.

What race is that?

Wow, this line of commentary is as embarrassing for the site as the recent guidance on fare evasion.

The slip ups on here really stand out, partly because of the generally high quality of the content but also because the slip ups are so, so bad.
