How did you get that free year? They contacted you, or did you contact them? I always wonder how long you have to be platinum for before they consider you for a free year. thx. I Agree 120K points seems a bit much

I didn't ask for it or contact Qantas at all. I just noticed when my annual year end clicked over when I checked online. I was expecting to go to Lifetime Gold but it stayed at Platinum for the whole year. But dropped back to Gold this year in July 2018 at my anniversary date.

Three years back, I was checking upcoming flight details on the phone with a CSR, he noted that I was going to miss out on platinum  by 60 points as this current flight was post the anniversary date and he asked if there were any unrecorded domestic flights. When told no, all my flights were recorded, he simply said that he would add in the 60 status points so that I could keep platinum which I have been able to earn every year since.

This calendar year there has been a marked upswing in the on plane meet and greet and a couple of outstanding service work arounds when the ground crew hadn't set up the power for my CPAP machine, whereas in times past it was all apologies but no heroic measures.

I wouldn't pay 120,000 pts to retain platinum - while the first class lounges are nice, the flights and upgrades those points can buy are where the best value is to be gained. 2hrs in a lounge or 17.5 hrs in business? No contest.

I recently discount economy to Singapore and I was greeted by the CSM on both legs and given exit row seats. check in the premium check in area in Singapore and got express passes on both legs. advantages of being platinum status

A couple of years ago I was about to drop back to LTG, but they took my average SC's from the previous 2 (or 3?) years which exceeded the 1200 per year avge, so kept Platinum. Not sure whether they still do that?

Would I spend 120K points to retain? No!

I’ve been +20yrs Platinum and when I took a leave of absense due to family matters I mentioned to Qantas I intended to return to work (so travel)once the family issues were addressed. No response other than when you return to work you’ll have to accrue the 1400 credits to return to Platinum. Being LTG is okay but Qantas’s approach has pushed me to appreciate Delta, AC and other carriers that I probably wouldn’t have. So Qantas has shown me just how little loyalty really matters to them.
