I recently got Velocity Silver with the status match and have the 2 free lounge passes. I'm flying MEL-AKL, can I use one to access the international lounge or are they for domestic only? The passes are listed on my Velocity profile online but I don't have physical copies, what do I do just ask at the entrance? Also could I give the second pass to a friend travelling with me to use?

No you do not need physical passes, they have record of whether or not you have used your passes or not in their computer systems in the lounge. Yes, you are able to allow a travelling companion to use one of the passes.

Be aware of an expiry date on the passes though, mine had a 3 month expiry date.

The passes you will receive are 2 x single entry passes. These are valid for entry to the Virgin Australia Lounges (domestic only) and are valid for 3 months from issue. They are registered under your velocity membership number. Virgin uses Air New Zealand's lounges at International terminals for gold and platinum members. You will be unble to use the single entry passes for an Air New Zealand lounge.
