Sorry, to add to the question... I find on my iPhone that there are plenty of ways to find restaurants nearby, but it's always a lengthy process to research which ones are actually GOOD. For example, if I want to find the closest Vietnamese restaurant near to my location that is rated as GOOD by people... what apps/search methods should I use to do that?
Hi Kevin, and welcome to AusBT! If your location is North Sydney I recommend the Vietnamese place in the Tower Square (across from Northpoint) - they're on the right-hand side opposite the little mobile phone store.
As for the rest of the world - one popular iPhone app to try for this is UrbanSpoon, which lets people review and rate restaurants and groups them by location. It's free and worth a try, although of course it's only as useful as the number of people visiting and rating those restaurants.
I usually as the people at the hotel, esp. if they have worked there for a while they can recommend a place, local publications or street mags are a good source for listings and if possible check out locally written food blogs.
Good point Kat. Also I recently downloaded the buUuk iPhone app which has a reasonably good database of restaurants, and you can view ones near you, sorted by rating. I think it's mostly covering the Asia-Pacific region though, not Europe or US.
Of course, in Sydney and Melbourne there's also the Good Food Guide apps for iPhone, though I've found they only really have good restaurant coverage in inner suburbs. If you're further out you only get one restaurant recommendation per couple of suburbs.
You could also try the AGFG app. It's a free app and has a good selection of restaurants all over Australia. You can download it here: http://www.agfg.com.au/iphoneapp or just do a search for 'agfg' in App Store.
