Good Morning everybody,

Am flying to Perth on Thursday on an economy saver = 20, and returning on Saturday, also 20. My Anniversary is 31 JUL. That will bring my total to 680. What would be the best (cheapest way) to go about it? Although I have no more bookings listed after Perth trip, I need to be in Boston next year (The word "need" is a serious one.) My goal is to fly to Tel Aviv (where THE world expert on the genetic cause of my rare disability conducts his research,) followed by 2-3 weeks in Europe, then off to Boston, NY then back to Melb. If I have the Gold status I would be highly inclined to fly QF and partner airlines where possible as maintaining Gold would be a goal. I will be 20 SC's short of gold come Saturday night. Also, my Qantas Club membership expires towards the end of June. Should I just do a status run to Adelaide or Launceston for (approx) $200? OR is there/could there be a way of kindly speaking to QF and asking if they will award me Gold Status? (I have had a LOT of cancelled flights, not to mention flights that have been rerouted and or rescheduled last minute (All QF.) Plus I was stuck in J last week on VH-EGL (I think) The LAST 330 to have a really POOR J class. (Note that the flight to NZ was supposed to be in the latest J class but that was changed last minute too.) Is it worth a crack?

What do you guys think?

Thanks so much!

I would think you have Buckley’s chance of getting QF staff to award you gold status to be honest. I’ve been 5 SCs short of tier retention before and told tough luck - though admittedly they did extend my membership anniversary by a few weeks to allow me to take another flight. You could always ask though, the worst that can happen will be you are told no. Really though, if you’re that close just take a short status hop somewhere. I’m unsure where you’re based but a quick trip to your nearest capital city shouldn’t cost more than $200 which is a lot cheaper than a Qantas Club membership.

Not sure where you are flying from (possibly Melbourne??) but upgrading to a fully flex in one direction should do it. It will be around $300 so compare that to a saver run to your nearest destination that gives 10SC each way. You said $200 but do check the fully flex price.

You're 20 status credits away with 2.5 months to earn them. Just book a round-trip flight from anywhere to anywhere on any Qantas fare to earn the status credits, like the rest of us have to, and you'll be set.

If you're from Sydney you can also do a return flight to Avalon on Jetstar which is usually pretty cheap - just get a Plus package both ways, or Max package one way. Should be able to do it for $150 - 200 which is generally cheaper than what you could do with Qantas...

Have you utilized your 500 point Loyalty Bonus for 50 SCs?

So do it before the end of June then, which is six weeks away, and then you'll have gold with free lounge access.

Even if you did the flight after, it's basically one return trip to get free lounge access for a year, so I'm sure you'll survive without lounge access for one day.

Jetstar with earn add on will likely be most cost effective option.

Avalon airport is in Melbourne. So do a trip to Sydney.

20 SCs short with a few months in hand - does this really need a lengthy discussion? The community has solved far greater challenges.

if you don't mind travelling from Avalon, it's probably a similar price the other way
