I have been a Platinum FF with Virgin from the start of the program and rarely fly any other domestic airline. However, last year I moved to Perth and have found that using points on this side of the country is far more problematic than from departure points on the East Coast. My family also likes holidaying in SE Asia and this is only available with SA where points are worth much less. Just wondering if others find Qantas a better proposition in Perth than Virgin or is it still much of a muchness?
If the domestic offerings of each airline is not a concern then I would certainly look at each airline's international networks. If you particularly visit Singapore in general, you will find the benefits of flying Virgin Australia helpful as they are a close partner with Singapore Airlines which offer multiple frequencies on this route. However, Qantas also has a wide range of flights. They fly once (sometimes twice) to Singapore but at less favourable times. Their partner Cathay Pacific also flies to Hong Kong giving you plenty of options to connect within South East Asia.
I personally find Qantas better overall, offering hot meals, better inflight offering than Virgin domestically. However, they do often charge a premium for this.
The bulk of points earnings are not from flying so in this case I would actually recommend you earn points with a flexiple points credit card like AMEX or Westpac Altitude so you have the flexibility to choose between either airlines' loyalty programs.
Personally, I've been more active with Virgin Australia than Qantas back when I lived in Perth.
The main reason (apart from better domestic business class availability and great service on the A330s), is that they are a close partner of Singapore Airlines and you can exchange Velocity Points into KrisFlyer Miles.
Perth is in a sweet spot with Singapore Airlines, where Perth to nearly anywhere in South East Asia is just 36,500 KF miles in business class for two flights, or 56,575 Velocity Points when transferred over. Taxes and fees are low too.
Qantas would be good if you're able to use their network out of Perth, or if you like to fly Cathay via Hong Kong.
