Has anyone seen any notification as to when Etihad will be putting on flights from SYD to LHR that don't require really long layovers in Abu Dhabi?

Not sure what you mean. There are flights with short layovers (a bit too short IMO).

SYD->AUH->LHR (EY455, 2h20min layover, EY19)

LHR->AUH->SYD (EY20, 1h45min layover, EY454)

Hmm website isnt showing connections to EY19, but rather the 10hr later EY17, so durations from Syd and Mel are +30 hrs. Suspect AUH is being careful about covid screening etc etc and have pushed out the usual 2hr connection min standard ? Did read that Heathrow now want you to check in 3 hrs before yr flight.. Who says airtravel romance is dead, I do!

It showed up for me on Google Flights but at this point in time, I would probably feel comfortable with a 5-6 hour layover with all the checks and potential rejection of your test results, or insufficient documents, delays blah blah blah, all sorts of things that could go wrong.

It's a hassle when your flights get delayed and your test results go out of date and you'll pony up an extra $300 for a extra fast test.
