Emirates may allow Qantas points for business class upgrades

By David Flynn, June 3 2014

IN BRIEF | Emirates is considering allowing travellers to use their Qantas Frequent Flyer points to apply for upgrades on the Gulf carrier's flights.

Under the current Qantas/Emirates partnership, passengers on Emirates flights can earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points and use them to redeem a reward ticket but not to upgrade from economy to business class or first class, as they can on Qantas.

However, according to The Financial Review, Emirates CEO Tim Clark is now considering whether to allow upgrades with points.

That said, Clark appears not entirely comfortable with the current points-based upgrade rates.

“What we found was perhaps – and this is no criticism of Qantas – they were a little bit more generous in the number of points you could use to upgrade" Clark said at the International Air Transport Association annual meeting in Doha, Qatar.

I find this quote somewhat ambiguous and confusing. Does he mean that he thinks Qantas currently undercharges?

Sorry, he being Tim Clark

That's what it sounds like to me. Hopefully this doesn't make QF think they can get away with charging more. Plus I also wonder if it would work the other way - ie. Skywards members being able to upgrade on QF.

I agree entirely with both points. No pun intended!

David, does this possibility extend to Business to First as well? Or just Economy to Business?

Trevor: we know only what's written in the article. If we had more detail we'd include more detail.

Wow, this will be great if it goes ahead.

Take the scenario of corporate travel policy only booking a certain class for international travel (eg: Premium Economy etc), and you maybe able to get Qantas and upgrade using own points.....soon there may be the option to fly Emirates one-stop to a host of destinations, and still use points to upgrade. Bring it on!

Interesting comment by TC about how generous QF is. Skywards charges 45k to upgrade from a flex fare to J on EK, as much as QF charges. For saver it's 57.5k with EK vs 72k with QF discount economy.

I think what TC is referring to are the DXB-EU/UK flights. Upgrading DXB-LHR only requires 15k/24k QFF points, whereas EK commands 25k/32.5k.

In the first example above I meant MEL/SYD-DXB

Furthermore, DXB-LHR seems to be the only leg that's a steal with QF. To upgrade SYD-SIN which a flight of a similar duration, it's 25k/40k QFF points.

So it would be good to seek clarifications on what TC meant by "a little bit more generous in the number of points you could use to upgrade" as he seems to be misinformed.

Bloody Hell - it's hard enough now to get an upgrade to J on the MEL-DXB-LHR route using Skywards miles - the last thing I want to have to deal with is having hordes of QFF passengers competing with me for the limited number of D bucket seats. This was my nightmare scenario when the QF/EK alliance was first mooted.
